Chapter 13
“I couldn’t even begin to tell you if anything’s missing,” Cassidy said, feeling helpless. “I have no idea what all my brother stuffed in there.”
“My question isn’t so much what it is, but why do they think it’s here?” Jace said.
“That, too,” Cassidy said ruefully.
She had called May, who once she heard what had happened had immediately offered to stay over and keep the shop open. After that, feeling way out of her depth, all she could think of to do was make more coffee, so they were sitting at the kitchen counter with mugs full, discussing what had happened.
A soft woof from Cutter made Cassidy jump a little. Silly, she told herself, to be this on edge now, hours after it was all over. Besides, Cutter’s quiet bark hadn’t been one of warning.
Then there was a knock on the door. Jace got up immediately. She let him, because she was fighting the sense of invasion that had begun the moment she’d realized that man had been inside her home.
Jace came back with another man, tall, rangy, with short dark hair and a touch of gray at the temples that somehow only added to his good looks. Along with a serious expression, he wore dark slacks and a white dress shirt—sans tie, she noted—under a black topcoat with the collar turned up; it had started to rain again, judging by the beads of water she could see on the coat.
“Detective Brett Dunbar,” Jace said. “He’s the one the deputy mentioned.”
Cassidy remembered Deputy Lindholm’s words about him. She could see why; he had the air of a man who could be trusted utterly to do the right thing.
“Foxworth helps us out now and then, and vice versa,” Dunbar said as he nodded at them both. And perhaps more importantly, Cutter greeted him as a friend, tail wagging happily. The man bent and scratched behind the dog’s right ear with an easy familiarity. “And this guy...well, I owe him a great deal.”
“Owe him?” Cassidy asked.
“If not for him, I’d never have met my wife.”
Jace looked puzzled, then his eyes widened and he looked at Cutter. Dunbar nodded. Jace looked away. And she had absolutely no idea what all that had been about.
“Would you like some coffee?” she asked.
“Already at my limit, thanks,” he said to her. “Sorry about your trouble. And doubly sorry that you weren’t taken seriously before.”
“I didn’t have any real proof of anything,” she said, to be fair. “Just a feeling.”
The man smiled then, and Cassidy had the thought that good-looking wasn’t a strong enough term. “Thank you. Many don’t see it that way.”
Then he pulled a cell phone out of his coat pocket, tapped it a couple of times and set it down on the counter, where they could all see the photograph he’d called up.
The image resembled the man in prison, yet it was different. This man looked younger, smaller somehow. And his eyes...were lighter. As it all came together, Cassidy felt a sudden tightening in her midsection and a tingling chill, as if Dunbar had brought the cold rain in with him.
